Sorry, I posted this hear by error, I think this is not the appropriate section and I do not know how to remove it, upps... I posted it as a new topic.
Hello, I’m going to get a Bioloid and I want a wireless communication with it, to program it, to control it while working and finally to command directly the servos and sensors from a PC.
I have to say that I’m new in robotics, and I almost decided to get the Bioloid Kit because of its freedom to built your own robots easily chaining the servos and sensors in a serial bus that works with a simple protocol so it would be easy in the future to change the processor if needed. Some people have developed HW so it is possible to add new kind of sensors apart from the ones Robotis provide currently, and I would like to know your opinion about the best wireless communication given that you are experienced in robotics, and some of you with wireless too?
That what I found, please correct me if I am wrong:
First, Robotis has developed or at least shells the Zig-100 which implements the ZigBee protocol, so it is the manufacturer’s recommendation/option.
Then I have seen that people have made the effort to develop at least a couple of solutions to use the Bioloid with Bluetooth (with the Parani ESD200 that can be fitted inside the CM-5 or other devices) making small HW modifications in the CM-5.
Finally we have Wifi with a much greater bandwidth but with much higher power consumption therefore I discarded it.
Comparing ZigBee and Bluetooth:
- ZigBee is less power consuming so the batteries will last longer. Can anybody tell me how long in time Bioloid batteries last, normal working and with Bluetooth and with the ZIG-100?
- ZigBee do not use as much protocol stack as Bluetooth so it must be faster, on the other hand ZigBee would have a greater transmission error probability. Which speed is necessary to run the control logic from a PC?
- The connection in ZigBee last a few millisecond and them it doesn’t lose it, while in Bluetooth it last a couple of seconds and it can lose it. Does anyone who uses Bluetooth could tell me if there are frequent disconnections, and if it is a big problem?
- With Bluetooh you can use a mobile phone or a PDA as a remote control.
- The price is similar in both options.
Finally, what option will you think is better?
